Valve adjustment

Hello all!

I'm new to the Paseo world, having just acquired a 1996 coupe. It has 136,000 miles on the clock, and I have no idea what maintenance has been done (if any). The oil was probably the dirtiest I've ever removed from an engine, and when I changed the plugs the the center electrode had been worn to a point (could they be original?). I'm doubting whether the valves have ever been adjusted, and am curious to see how far out of spec they are. My question is, do you all adjust the valves at the 30K interval recommended? I've adjusted valves on a motorcycle before, but the concept of replacing shims is new to me. Is it possible it's gone 130K without an adjustment? It seems to run fairly well, though the idle is pretty rough below 1K RPMs.

Thanks in advance,
Brody

I've never adjusted valves.

If the oil was that bad, you might want to be looking at timing belt, coolant flush, brakes too?

Good 'low' miles on the car. My '97 has about that.

Glad to hear that the valves are not critical. Thanks for the list of things to check - I'll be sure to take a look at those.
